5 Dry AMD

There is currently no clinically effective treatment for dry AMD and patients’ sight will gradually deteriorate.

At the point where the patient becomes unable to read N8 or carry out their normal day to day tasks it is appropriate to issue a LVI letter so that self referral to Social Services can take place. Consideration should also be given to referral, with the patient’s permission to any low vision service operating in your area e.g. the North Birmingham Low Vision Service available to patients of GPs in North Birmingham and Erdington or the low vision service within your local eye department or at BMEC.

Referral to Birmingham Focus would be another option.
